June 2, 2014 - Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica)
Requested by: drbogenbroom
This large pigeon is found on the Nicobar and Solomon Islands, Palau, and the Malay Archipelago. It eats a variety of different plant foods, including seeds, fruits, and buds. Nicobar Pigeons travel in flocks between islands, spending their nights on smaller islands isolated from predators. The white tails of the adults may help flock members keep track of each other during flight at dawn and dusk. They are classified as Near Threatened due to hunting, habitat loss, and trapping for the pet market and are related to the extinct Dodo.
